The ‘Our Year Since…’ series of DVDs follows Gemma, who discusses events of the past year since the death of a close family member (i.e. mum, dad, gran or grandad). The story starts from the early days, through to the funeral and beyond.
The animation covers key milestones and shows how Gemma came to terms with her bereavement and the whole family’s grieving process. She talks of help from her counsellor, and how it’s ‘normal’ to feel many emotions such as sadness and anger, and how that’s not ‘weird’ and that everyone has similar feelings when someone dies. We also learn how other members of the family coped too.
The ‘Our Year Since…’ series of DVDs has been to proven to be a powerful resource, communicating well with children and stimulating conversation and expression either on a one to one basis or in group sessions.
With a subject matter that is normally hard to approach or difficult for children/young people to discuss, viewing the DVDs in a group session can initiate open discussion about events depicted in the animation, enabling children/young people to have a better understanding of their own grief and bereavement and also enabling those who haven’t experienced it personally to have empathy and understanding.
On a one to one basis
The DVDs can be used during a one to one counselling session with a bereaved child/young person by counsellors, therapists or family liaison officers. With a running time of 12 minutes the DVDs can be watched and then discussed with the child/young person initiating conversation about feelings and situations that may normally be harder to achieve through traditional methods.
The DVDs can be given to bereaved children/young people to take home and watch alone or with other family members, giving them time to think through the issues in the animation before returning to a counselling session to discuss the events portrayed in relation to their own situation.
